Young resident breathes new life into neighborhood with apartment building contributions at five years old
In a remarkable display of community spirit and youthful determination, a wildflower meadow has been established in the residential quarters of Rostock, thanks to the visionary idea of five-year-old Alva.
Initially conceived as a trial run, the "Flower Meadow Project" has been warmly embraced by the housing community and the board of the owners' and tenants' community. Alva's idea was sparked by her concern for the beautiful flowers that were being mowed down daily by the lawn mowing robot, Horst, which is used in the residential quarters on the Wooded Peninsula.
Alva's parents, Mandy and Samuel Drews, were quick to support their daughter's idea. Samuel, in a show of solidarity, drafted a letter to the housing community, expressing the importance of nurturing such innovative ideas, especially from the younger generation. The letter, along with Alva's proposal, received a positive response from more than 70 households, with about a third expressing their support for the project.
The project, which involves creating small islands around trees for the wildflower meadow, was met with approval. A low fence made of willow branches was decided upon, instead of an electric one, to maintain the natural aesthetic of the meadow.
The negotiations, according to Samuel, were a valuable lesson in finding a compromise. Mandy added that Alva got to experience that she can actually change things that she doesn't like, fostering a sense of empowerment in the young girl.
Samuel and Alva plan to dig up and plant around two trees with flowers such as small wild strawberries and lavender. If the project proves successful, more flowering areas could be created, transforming the residential quarters into a vibrant, flower-filled oasis.
However, the wildflower meadow is not without its challenges. If the majority of residents dislike the meadow, it will revert back to a lawn. The meadow requires regular watering during the summer to prevent it from turning brown and drying out within a few days. Despite these challenges, the spirit of cooperation and innovation continues to thrive, making this project a testament to the power of community spirit.

The Flower Meadow Project, initially conceived by Alva as a solution to prevent the mowing down of wildflowers, has incorporated science and environmental-science, as it promotes biodiversity and encourages a lifestyle more in harmony with nature. The project's success could potentially inspire similar home-and-garden transformations in other residential communities, further integrating these principles into daily living.
