Year 2025: Sources for Affordable School Supplies

With the back-to-school period just 12 days away, it's time to start preparing for the academic year. Here's a handy guide to help you make the most of your money when it comes to stationery supplies.

Shopping before the back-to-school period can help avoid a price increase, and it offers more choice. Retailers like Staples, Target, and Walmart are your best bets for competitive pricing on stationery. These stores tend to offer the most competitive prices for stationery supplies, especially during back-to-school sales.

Buying own-brand products is usually more cost-effective for standard school supplies. For instance, Walmart’s Pen and Gear brand offers wide-ruled paper and index cards at lower prices than Avery or Post-it brands. Staples also encourages price matching, helping ensure you get the best price even on branded goods.

However, if you're in search of premium or specialty stationery, expect higher prices and shop niche retailers accordingly. Specialty or premium stationery retailers, like Yoseka or bungu, cater to enthusiasts rather than bargain shoppers.

The family prefers their usual supermarket for better deals compared to online shopping, but some items are purchased online to save money. Comparison is key to finding the cheapest supplies. For example, a pack of felt-tip pens costs 1.15 euros at Auchan, 2.49 euros at Bureau Vallée, and over 3 euros on Entrediscount.com.

Bureau Vallée, a specialized store, claims to negotiate prices to the best and have the same selling price as the manufacturer's price in their aisles. Three baskets of eight articles were compared for determining the cheapest supplier, and the total cost of the articles in the supermarket was 32 euros, 30.27 euros in Bureau Vallée, and 27.30 euros on the stationery website.

The Consumption Observatory - UFC-Que Choisir states that own-brand products are often more robust in terms of quality compared to national brands. Consumers are increasingly turning to own-brand products, with almost half of the basket now containing them. Gregory Caret, from the Consumption Observatory - UFC-Que Choisir, states that own-brand products are not taboo for consumers.

In summary, to maximize savings while covering different stationery needs, consider shopping at Staples, Target, or Walmart for competitive pricing on standard supplies. Opt for own-brand products for cost-effectiveness, and compare prices to find the cheapest supplies. Happy shopping!
