Week of Purple Transitioning to Green Concludes Smoothly!
In the heart of Worcester, Massachusetts, the College of the Holy Cross is gearing up for a series of environmental events aimed at raising awareness and promoting sustainability. The week-long Purple Goes Green initiative, sponsored by the Student Government Association (SGA), concluded recently, but the college has already announced its upcoming plans for July 2025.
During Purple Goes Green week, several events were held, including informational discussions, a giveaway, a movie screening, an SGA pub night with environmental trivia, and a Hogan lobby table offering baked goods in exchange for students detailing their personal sustainability plans and practices. The week also saw students signing up for Disc Golf in Newton Hill with the Outdoors club, an off-campus clean-up with the participation of the Men's Rowing team, and the Show the Waste Event held at Kimball Dining Hall to highlight food waste accumulation.
Looking ahead, Holy Cross has two significant sustainability-related events scheduled. On July 16, 2025, the college will organise an initiative called "Small Steps, Big Impact" on Paper Bag Day, where they will make paper medicine covers as a contribution to sustainability and service. The following week, on July 19, Holy Cross will host the Laudato Si Festival and Environmental Event, a notable celebration focused on environmental awareness and sustainability.
The College of the Holy Cross, a Jesuit school, has set an ambitious goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. To help achieve this goal, the college will be hiring a Director of Sustainability. Cathy Liebowitz, the first Director of Sustainability at Holy Cross, assumed her position in April and has been at the forefront of global discussions about sustainability and climate change. An interview with Cathy Liebowitz about her vision for sustainability at Holy Cross was published in the "features" section.
In the interview, Liebowitz discussed her plans to improve sustainability on campus and work towards carbon-neutrality by 2040. She also shared her excitement about the upcoming events, including the "Small Steps, Big Impact" initiative and the Laudato Si Festival.
The Laudato Si Festival and Environmental Event is expected to be a significant celebration, following in the footsteps of the successful Purple Goes Green week. For those interested in Holy Cross’ environmental events, July 16 and 19, 2025, are key dates to note.

In addition, a box truck with a tiny home made of repurposed dumpster material was available for touring on Thursday during Purple Goes Green week, offering a tangible example of sustainable living. The college continues to encourage and promote sustainable practices, both on and off campus, and looks forward to a greener future.
