Vienna's Postsparkasse: Art, Science Hub Opens After Renovation
Vienna's iconic former Postsparkasse, now a hub for art and science, has been beautifully renovated and is open to the public. The Federal Real Estate Company (BIG) has transformed the historic building, originally designed by Otto Wagner, into a connecting piece between the University of Applied Arts and the Academy of Sciences.
The inner courtyard of the adjacent Academy of Sciences, also renovated by BIG between 2020 and 2022, is now accessible to the public. The building's architecture, revolutionary for its time, features unique optics, materials, and facade design. The former cash hall and café Exchange are open to visitors during semester times, preserving original features like sofa cushions, brass light switches, and a hat and coat stand. The former safe deposit box system remains almost intact, with a functioning board indicating customer use. BIG's business manager, Christine Dornaus, believes well-maintained spaces like these foster learning and creativity.
The former Postsparkasse, built between 1904 and 1906, is managed by Christoph Matznetter since 2019 via a 99-year construction rights contract. BIG oversees over 2,000 properties, including this historic landmark.
The former Postsparkasse, now a place of art and science, stands as a testament to Vienna's rich history and architectural heritage. Its renovation and public accessibility ensure that future generations can appreciate its unique design and significance.
