Unveiled Exclusively: Artifacts of Compulsion

In the vibrant city of Mumbai, a chance encounter six years ago in an antiques store led to a unique and fruitful creative partnership between Samir Wadekar and Jaiveer Johal. This dynamic duo, who share a mutual love for the past, vintage, Wedgwood, Indian art, and the 1979 British series Antiques Roadshow, have recently transformed a three-bedroom apartment adjacent to Jaiveer’s main residence into a compact, elegant one-bedroom home.

The apartment, now a jewel box of a space, boasts a home gym, reading room, two bathrooms, and a powder room, all designed with the intention of hosting intimate evening soirées and weekend brunches. The redesign process was marked by a highly fluid, spontaneous, and deeply personal approach, with no fixed brief or deadline, allowing creativity the freedom to evolve naturally.

One of the standout features of the redesigned apartment is the thoughtful curation of pieces that interact uniquely with natural light. Some surfaces glint softly when exposed to sunlight, while others absorb it, creating a dynamic and lively atmosphere. This nuanced attention to how light interacts with furniture and decor reflects the care taken to personalise and animate the space.

Samir Wadekar, who has previously helped Jaiveer curate and decorate his other apartments, observed that the pieces in the redesigned apartment each have a different response to sunlight. This observation adds to the overall ambiance and aesthetic of the apartment, highlighting the unique ways sunlight interacts with the pieces in the apartment.

The collaboration between Samir Wadekar and Jaiveer Johal was characterised by a deep mutual understanding and shared aesthetic sensibilities. Their organic design journey balanced function with artistry to tailor a home truly reflective of Jaiveer Johal’s personality and lifestyle. This project is a testament to their creative synergy, showcasing a space that is not only functional but also a reflection of their shared passion for the past and vintage objects.

The redesign of the apartment, a testament to Samir Wadekar and Jaiveer Johal's creative synergy, was more than just a home makeover. It transformed the space into a compact, elegant one-bedroom home that embodies a unique blend of their shared affection for interior design, vintage items, and the lifestyle evolution depicted in the 1979 British series Antiques Roadshow. The dynamic interplay of light and the carefully curated pieces in the home, each with its distinct response to sunlight, further accentuates the space as a reflection of their shared passion for home and garden aesthetics and the past.
