Newsworthy Self-Built Home in Crouch End, North London

In the heart of Crouch End, North London, a remarkable self-built home has emerged, designed and constructed by Hewitt Studios for the personal use of ZDA. This innovative three-bedroom property showcases a unique blend of modern design and clever space-saving elements.

The home's layout is unconventional, with the bedrooms situated on the ground floor and the main living areas on the first. This upside-down arrangement offers a fresh perspective, enhancing the living experience.

The interior and exterior walls, floors, and bathrooms of the home are adorned with blue Irish limestone planks, lending an air of elegance and sophistication. The material palette is limited to black American walnut, volcanic blue Irish limestone, and natural lime plaster, creating a harmonious and cohesive aesthetic.

The living spaces are made possible by thoughtful design elements such as pocket doors and a partition that can divide the upper floor, offering flexibility to suit various needs. The upper floor can function as a single, open-plan space or be divided into a private bedroom, complete with a shower room at the top of the stairs.

The heart of the home is the kitchen, where American walnut countertops grace the stone island, set behind a walnut screen that houses the hob. A solid walnut study desk suspends in the double-height entrance hall, adding a touch of elegance.

The home's exterior is clad with Iroko timber, chosen for its stability, robustness, durability, and competitive pricing for a hardwood. The front canopy structure was incorporated to provide additional floor area, responding to the diminishing roof line of the house next door.

Two sunken courtyards, one at the front and another at the rear, offer tranquil outdoor spaces for relaxation and enjoyment. Insulated shutter doors can be opened from a walnut-clad storage wall and window seat, adding a sense of wow factor to these areas.

This self-built home, once a pair of derelict lock-up garages, is a testament to creative design, innovative thinking, and meticulous craftsmanship. It stands as a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication and a passion for architectural excellence.
