Tunnel at Abdul Razzaq Gate approaches revival following upkeep work

The Darwaza Tunnel, a key traffic artery linking several vital areas in Kuwait, is undergoing a new phase of maintenance and rehabilitation. This extensive national restoration project is being fully funded by the Commercial Bank, with a KD 650,000 donation approved by the Municipal Council.

The Darwaza Tunnel, originally part of the old Kuwait Wall, holds significant heritage value. The project management aims not only to address the structural issues that led to its closure in 2020 due to cracks and fissures, but also to preserve its historical significance.

The project includes raising the ceilings, removing rust, and reinforcing structural supports. Asphalt laying, installation of signals, and upgrades to the surrounding infrastructure are also part of the plan. Modern materials and methods are being applied to ensure the longevity of the Tunnel.

The internal repair work has already been completed, and the overhead traffic signal was opened to pedestrians last year. Paving, lighting, and landscaping works are being carried out to improve the overall appearance of the area surrounding the Darwaza Tunnel.

The maintenance work aims to enhance sustainability and long-term protection. The bank will cover all expenses for the project, including design, implementation, supervision, permits, and related requirements. However, it remains unclear which authority in Kuwait is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the renovation work on the Abdul Razzaq Gate or Darwaza Tunnel.

The Darwaza Tunnel restoration project also includes the restoration of the Abdul Razzaq Gateway Tunnel and the street beneath it. With the project progressing well, the Darwaza Tunnel is expected to reopen to pedestrians soon. This will not only alleviate traffic congestion in the area but also allow the public to enjoy this historic landmark once again.
