In the heart of Kaarst, Germany, a tradition of giving and community spirit is once again in full swing with the Wish Tree initiative. This charitable event, now in its 16th year, has been a staple of the town's holiday season, bringing joy to countless faces.

The Wish Tree initiative, in partnership with the local Kaarster helfen association, has been a collaborative effort between the city of Kaarst, charities, schools, churches, and community groups since 2021. This year, the event has expanded to cater to the wishes of adults, in addition to children, as the previous shoebox action has been replaced by the adult wish hanging on the Wish Tree.

The initiative works by picking a card from the Wish Tree, fulfilling the wish, and returning the beautifully wrapped gift to the town hall. In exceptional cases, gifts can be received at the Kaarst town hall information desk. The dates for receiving gifts this year are: Friday, December 8, 2-5 pm, Thursday, December 14, 5-7 pm, and Saturday, December 16, 10 am-2 pm.

The wishes range from toys, clothing, school supplies, to other necessities, often customized by age or interest of the recipient. The mayor, Ursula Baum, has noted that reading the wish cards often reveals modest but impactful wishes. She hopes for many participants in the Wish Tree initiative and has even picked wish cards herself.

The Protestant and Catholic church communities in Kaarst are also participating in the Wish Tree initiative. The gifts are then distributed to the recipients, bringing joy to their faces at the festival.
