Transform the Race Track Entrance into a Relaxation Zone: A Resident from Munich Pursues the Transformation of Perlacher Forest Entrance
In the heart of Munich, Sabener Platz, the gateway to Perlacher Forest, is set to undergo a significant transformation. Anneke Steinmueller, a local resident, has proposed a redesign for this bustling intersection, aiming to turn it into a welcoming leisure spot suitable for joggers, hikers, cyclists, dog walkers, and families.
Steinmueller, along with her sister who is a landscape architect, presented their design at a recent citizens' assembly, where it received great support. The proposed redesign aims to address the fairness of the area for all groups, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone.
At the core of the redesign is the creation of dedicated pathways. Joggers, hikers, and cyclists will have separate and clearly marked trails and paths to avoid conflicts and ensure safety. Durable, non-slip surfaces suitable for varied activities will be used to ensure the paths can withstand heavy use.
Open grassy areas and shaded zones with trees will be incorporated for relaxation, picnics, and family gatherings. Dog walkers will have designated off-leash areas, equipped with dog waste stations and seating for owners. Play areas for children and families will be installed using safe, natural materials.
Benches and resting points along paths will provide a place for all users to pause and enjoy the environment. Adequate lighting will ensure the area is safe for early morning or evening use by joggers and cyclists, while clear visibility will promote safety for all users.
Native plants and trees will be used to enhance ecological value, provide shade, and improve aesthetics. Drinking fountains suitable for humans and pets will be offered, and the area will connect seamlessly with nearby trails, parks, and urban infrastructure to encourage extended use.
The redesign also includes additional facilities such as tables, a toilet, a service hut with E-charging station, defibrillator, Wi-Fi, and a drinks machine. However, the straight tarmac road leading from Sabener Platz to Oberhaching will not undergo any changes as part of the proposed redesign.
The State Forests have not kept track of whether the forest attracts more cyclists than before, but the current layout of Sabener Platz, as an unassuming street intersection, often leads to conflicts during the summer, particularly at Sabener Platz. Steinmueller recalls a recent visit to Sabener Platz with her sister and children, where they had to constantly warn the children to be careful due to the cyclists.
While the implementation timeline for the redesign has not been announced, the proposed changes aim to transform Sabener Platz into a more suitable leisure spot for everyone, making it a welcoming and versatile addition to Munich's outdoor recreational areas.
Steinmueller, together with her landscape architect sister, envisioned the transformed Sabener Platz to not only serve as a leisure spot but also as an extension of home-and-garden, encouraging outdoor-living with its open grassy areas, shaded zones, and designated off-leash areas for pets. The proposed redesign will ensure a lifestyle-friendly environment, integrating safe pathways, play areas, and facilities for a diverse range of users.
