TotalEnergies Shifts Strategy, Focuses on High-Margin Upstream Growth and Selective Low-Carbon Investments

TotalEnergies has announced a shift in its investment strategy, aiming to focus on high-margin upstream growth projects and selective low-carbon investments. The company has also been active in the sale and acquisition of various energy assets.

The energy giant has lowered its net investment forecast for the period 2026-2030 to $15 billion to $17 billion annually. This move signals a strategic focus on projects that offer high margins and align with the company's low-carbon objectives.

In line with this strategy, TotalEnergies has sold a 50% stake in a 270 MW wind and solar portfolio in France to Eiffel Investment Group. This sale follows a similar transaction in 2021, where EDF Renewables acquired a 50% stake in the same portfolio from TotalEnergies. The company has also sold a 50% stake in 1.4 GW of its US solar assets to KKR for $950 million.

On the acquisition front, TotalEnergies has purchased a 49% stake in natural gas production assets in the Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma from Continental Resources. This move demonstrates the company's continued interest in gas as a flexible source of energy.

Looking ahead, TotalEnergies plans to increase its electricity production by approximately 20% annually by 2030. The company aims to achieve this through a balanced mix of energy sources, with renewables contributing 70% and flexible gas sources contributing 30% of the total production.

TotalEnergies' strategic realignment is evident in its recent transactions and investment forecasts. The company is actively divesting from certain assets while acquiring others, all with the goal of focusing on high-margin, low-carbon projects. As the energy landscape evolves, TotalEnergies is positioning itself to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
