Happiness, as they say, comes in all shapes and sizes. This rings particularly true when comparing the various cities across Germany. Shedding light on the changing landscape of city happiness, a new city ranking reveals that Kassel is still the happiest city among the 40 largest cities with over 200,000 inhabitants.

Kassel retains its crown: Once again, Kassel residents crowned themselves as the happiest among German city dwellers in the "Happiness Atlas" of the South German Class Lottery (SKL). This northern Hesse city has held the top spot since 2024, leaving the chasing pack far behind.

The next closest are Krefeld and Düsseldorf, who were in fifth and eighth place last year, respectively. However, Erfurt and Aachen have slid down the rankings from second and third to sixth and fifth, respectively. Rostock remains hanging at the bottom of the ladder, just as it was in 2024.

The survey provides an intriguing insight: larger cities seem to struggle with high life satisfaction. Among the top ten happiest cities, only Düsseldorf and Hamburg are among the ten largest cities in Germany, while smaller cities like Augsburg, Aachen, and Münster make their mark. Major cities like Munich, Frankfurt am Main, and Berlin rank 27th, 35th, and 37th, respectively.

The Chasm Between Rostock and Frankfurt am Main

"Closing the gap between the very satisfied and the very dissatisfied is essential for high life satisfaction in big cities," says Bernd Raffelhuschen of the University of Freiburg, in charge of the city ranking for 2025. In cities like Frankfurt am Main and Rostock, this gap is particularly wide.

Smaller cities often excel in factors like a student-dominated environment, young population, many green spaces, and excellent healthcare services. However, they frequently score only slightly above average in objectively measurable areas like infrastructure, education, and culture.

The Institute for Demoscopy Allensbach surveyed a total of 23,468 residents aged 16 to 78 between January 2022 and April 2025 for the evaluation. Overall, there is a positive trend compared to last year, which the SKL attributes to the inclusion of data from the COVID-19 year 2021 in the 2024 survey results.

The city ranking focuses on the comparison between subjective life satisfaction and objective quality of life. Statistics on living conditions, demographics, prosperity, and environmental quality were considered for quality of life.

The Commission has also been consulted on the draft directive regarding the factors contributing to city happiness, such as quality of life, social connections, environmental factors, economic stability, and cultural and recreational opportunities.

Lifestyle choices and sustainable living plays a significant role in individual's personal growth and education-self development, as evidenced by the high life satisfaction in smaller cities like Augsburg, Aachen, and Münster known for their student-dominated environments, green spaces, and excellent healthcare services.

Career development and educational opportunities can potentially improve the overall happiness in major cities like Frankfurt am Main and Rostock, especially when working towards closing the gap between the very satisfied and the very dissatisfied.
