Thuringian sausage manufacturer faces significant job losses after a century in business.
Thuefleiwa, a renowned meat processing company synonymous with regional meat and sausage products in Thuringia, is undergoing a significant change. After over a century of operation, the company based in Apolda is transitioning to a new location in Serba, marking the end of an era for the traditional brand.
The Closure and Its Aftermath
The decision to close the Apolda facility is due to the site's structural and technical condition, which can no longer be operated efficiently. This change has led to the unfortunate dismissal of 58 employees, with their employment contracts ending on October 31. However, the new investor from Serba is taking over 70 employees from Thuefleiwa, providing a future for many of the affected workers.
Mirko Schwendel, the Managing Director of Thuefleiwa, expressed his regret about the setback but acknowledged its unavoidability given the circumstances. He will remain in a leading position at EWU Thuringian Sausage and Specialties GmbH, which is taking over the operation of Thuefleiwa, and be responsible for the branch network.
A New Beginning for Thuefleiwa
The new investor in Serba has expanded the plant there for around eight million euros, and skilled workers are still being sought at the site. Former production employees of Thuefleiwa have the opportunity to apply for jobs at the new location.
Thuefleiwa's closure is considered a significant loss for the region, as Thuringian Sausages are a cultural heritage and an integral part of the local identity. However, the legacy of Thuefleiwa and its commitment to traditional recipes and production methods will continue at the new location in Serba.
Thuefleiwa's Legacy
Thuefleiwa has a rich history, with numerous branches in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. Despite the challenges faced in recent years, including increased competition, shifts in consumer preferences, and consolidation trends within the meat industry, Thuefleiwa has remained an influential name in preserving Thuringian meat processing traditions.
The company's traditional brand and regional specialty focus have contributed to the identity and recognition of Thuringian sausage as a protected regional specialty. Thuefleiwa's closure does not diminish its impact on the Thuringian sausage industry, as the company continues to emphasize authenticity and quality in its products.
In this difficult situation, the parties involved have achieved a satisfactory solution, ensuring the continuation of Thuefleiwa's legacy and the preservation of Thuringian sausages as a valued part of the region's cultural heritage.
The closure of Thuefleiwa's Apolda facility leaves room for a new lifestyle in Serba, as the company transitions to a renovated home-and-garden that doubles as a state-of-the-art food-and-drink production facility. The new location promises not only a change of scenery but also opportunities for former Thuefleiwa employees to continue their culinary journeys, contributing to the preservation of Thuringian meat processing traditions.
