Residents of the Omsk region chomp down an average of 50 kg of fruits and berries yearly, according to health statistics, but the Ministry of Health advises consuming twice as much - 90-100 kg. To follow the local diet, stick to the geographical principle: indulge in produce that grows in your neck of the woods. So while exotic fruits are tasty, local gems like strawberries from your garden are better.

Berries Galore, Near and Far

Specialized berry farms in Omsk have commenced the harvest of Siberia's favorite berry—blueberries—and strawberries are ripe and ready for picking at nurseries.

Taste some hand-picked blueberries daily at the Kirillovsky Fruit Nursery in Verkhny Karbus - just a 30-minute drive or train ride to the "Karbyushevo-2" station. Daily blueberry picking comes with a cost of around 300 rubles per kilogram.

You can find strawberries at the Chernolsky Fruit Nursery from 8:00 to 14:00, Monday to Friday, with weighing and payment by 16:00. The cost for a kilogram depends on the mode of payment: 350 rubles in cash or 365 rubles by card, and a 100-ruble entry fee is required for field access - the nursery staff confirms.

The Kalachinsky Nursery only offers blueberries for self-picking at a starting price of 100 rubles per kilogram, as they share – "the place is teeming with folks!"

This year, berries are ripened early and are in abundance. While street vendors ask around 240-300 rubles for 200 grams of strawberries, some of which are sourced from their own gardens or picked from nurseries, blueberries remain more affordable at 200 rubles for a 200-gram plastic container. "It's almost over," a grandmother at the market notes, adding, "Soon, I'll bring raspberries."

📊 Did You Know?

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Omsk region yielded a whopping 15,400 tons of fruits and berries in 2024! The department intends to see higher figures for the upcoming season. However, bear in mind that Omsk berries won't end up on supermarket shelves since the region lacks processing enterprises (1). The area of berry nurseries is also gradually shrinking as agricultural lands are being converted to crop production.
