Supporting One Another
In a significant move towards combating loneliness and anonymity among the elderly, a new multi-generational housing quarter is set to be established at the site of the former Benrather Hospital in Benrath, Düsseldorf.
The project, initiated by the "Gemeinsam Leben am Schloss Benrath e.V." association, will see the operation of a group home for eight elderly people in the north-eastern building on Benrodestraße. This group home will be located on the ground floor and first floor of the building.
A total of 60 apartments are reserved for the Hospitalstraße 1 housing project in four houses. Thirty-five of these apartments will ensure affordable housing for people with lower incomes, with cold rent ranging from 6.80 to 10.80 euros per square meter. Cold rent for the privately financed apartments is expected to be below the average for new apartments in Düsseldorf (13.74 euros).
Städtische Wohnungsbau GmbH (SWD) has been entrusted with the property for the construction of apartments, which they received in 2016. SWD is investing around 31.7 million euros in this construction project.
The historic chapel will be at the centre of the multi-generational housing quarter. A staircase will be built on the open side of the chapel for future user access, although the use and user of the chapel have not yet been finally decided.
Construction can now begin after the demolition of the old hospital and the granting of a building permit. The multi-generational housing project aims to foster mutual support between young families and older residents, as well as joint leisure activities.
A care facility for eight people will be operated by Arbeiterwohlfahrt Duesseldorf in one of the houses. Marion Warden, managing director of AWO Düsseldorf, expressed pleasure about offering a third group home for seniors with dementia in the project.
