New Art School in Berlin Encourages Community and Creativity

A new art school, named Art School, has opened its doors in Berlin, offering a unique summer program filled with residencies, workshops, and community activities. The school, located at the multidisciplinary Art Haus, is the brainchild of Emma Patmore, the manager and art school producer, who saw a need for more creative spaces in the city.

The Art School is inspired by interdisciplinary creative spaces like Joseph Beuy's Free International University and Tania Bruguera's Arte Util. It aims to create a cultural shift away from individualism and the exaltation of monetary gain in urban spaces, instead fostering a sense of belonging and community.

The summer program, running from July 15 to August 7, features a variety of classes, including ceramics, woodworking, dance, inflatable sculpture, mushroom growing, modular synthesisers, experimental tattoo club, and more. Yusa Jacobo, the ceramics instructor, bases their class on the knowledge of original people from South America, while Sabina Moe teaches improv dance lessons, including a charades-like activity where students act out and guess written prompts.

The school's mission is to promote creativity without constraint and to explore questions about access to creative possibilities, artist livelihood, and community building. It has a "members only" policy, but anyone can become a member for €5 a year.

Art School is entangled with social justice, as reflected in course offerings like "Poetry & Activism" and "Conflict & Accountability". Patmore believes that the art school has created a rare sense of belonging for its students, as many feel that the idea of creating value through community is still a radical one under capitalism.

The current semester is hosting 15 courses, with the expectation to teach the full programme again in October. The final summer celebration is a public showcase on August 11, where students will present their work.

The Art School operates with complete autonomy from investors and is managed by Patmore and her team. They value care, support, and inclusivity over gender, with a mostly women team. The space also hosts rehearsals, studios, jam sessions, film screenings, an alternative radio station, and a sauna.

For the most accurate and detailed information, including exact workshop offerings, dates, and enrollment procedures, it would be best to check Art School’s official channels directly, such as their Instagram or website. The school's summer program includes summer residencies and a broad range of workshops and community activities, culminating in a public showcase on August 11. There's a lot of love put into the space by everyone involved, making it a vibrant and welcoming creative hub in Berlin.

The Art School, with its emphasis on creativity and community, also offers a home-and-garden workshop, allowing students to explore their green thumb and cultivate their own lifestyle. Additionally, the school's summer program, alongside various artistic courses, includes a mushroom growing class, bridging the gap between art, sustainability, and home-and-garden lifestyle.
