New Beats in a Struggling Neighborhood
The rhythm of life echoes through an open eatery in Kaméré, a working-class neighborhood in Nouméa still grappling with recovery after last year's riots. Yasmine Goulamhoussen's restored eatery, a surprise to the locals,emitssome tunes that uplift the spirits of those who pass by. "A bit of music at my restaurantlightens everyone's mood," she shares with our platform. "They felt forgotten. They're even asking themselves: how come someone dared to come here when everyone said no one would?"
The 2024 unrest served to widen a chasm between these deprived neighborhoods, forefront of the pro-independence movement, and the rest. Tensions remain, and Ariane notes the increasing difficulty for New Caledonians to connect.
"Meeting up is becoming a relic," she laments. "Fear of the unknown and judgment weigh heavily on people. 'Let's meet up over here.' 'No, I'm not going, because if I stay out late, something might happen.' It's sad because all I ask of New Caledonians is discernment, the ability to separate things. What's happened, we must learn from it; what's to come, we must build."
Youths in the area remain torn, caught between simmering anger and the desire to move on. Élise explains, "Change is slow. I invited some youths to join me, but none showed up - only the two from this morning came. The rest are reluctant, fearful of judgement. Many are scared of what others think, especially if there are outsiders around. They feel self-conscious."
Virginie, a community elder, remains hopeful. "Change is afoot," she insists. "The neighborhood is calmer. There's no need to be afraid - come talk to the young people."
Her optimism resonates with many New Caledonians, despite the political uncertainties that threaten to destabilize the region once again.
