Striving for a cosmetics sector producing no waste
Provital Embraces Zero-Waste Principles in Beauty Industry
Provital, a leading company in the beauty industry, is making strides towards a more sustainable future by adopting upcycling practices and zero-waste principles.
The Spanish-based company is committed to preserving rice as a vital food source while minimizing environmental impact. By using upcycled ingredients, Provital creates products that not only enhance the value of raw materials but also support a circular economy model.
One of the key examples of Provital's commitment to sustainability is the development of HydrafenceTM, an active ingredient launched in 2019. Inspired by the principles of the circular economy and the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Ensuring Sustainable Production and Consumption Patterns), HydrafenceTM is a natural active moisturizer and skin barrier enhancer. It is based on a new hydrocolloid matrix of rice amylopectin and calcium-rich algae extract.
HydrafenceTM provides immediate moisturizing action 30 minutes after application and lasts for 120 hours. This innovative product demonstrates Provital's dedication to creating more nourishing, natural active ingredients via 100% sustainable sources and upcycled substances.
Provital's journey towards zero-waste practices began in 2016 when they recovered 82% of all the waste generated in the production process. In 2020, they managed to generate only 0.22kg of waste for every kilo of product produced.
The company's efforts extend beyond their own operations. Provital has initiated a pilot project with Barberà del Vallès City Council to collect and recycle the organic and plastic waste generated in their industry canteens.
By facilitating a circular economy at the ingredient level, Provital hopes to inspire the wider industry to strive for zero-waste cosmetics. The company believes that taking care of the planet involves reducing waste, and they seek to enhance waste management so that everything is reusable, recyclable, and sustainably sourced.
In a bid to further reduce waste in the beauty and personal care industry, Provital developed an upcycled product using byproducts of rice cropping to create one of the key components of the active ingredient. By utilizing rice byproducts, Provital enhances the value of raw materials while supporting a circular economy model.
In conclusion, Provital's commitment to zero-waste practices and upcycling is a testament to their dedication to sustainability. HydrafenceTM, launched in 2019, is just one example of their efforts to create sustainable, upcycled products that not only benefit consumers but also contribute to a healthier planet.
