Cherry Harvest Begins in Southwest Germany Amid Challenging Conditions

Southwest commences cherry picking season - Southwestern region's cherry crop yielding fruits

Southwest Germany's cherry growers have initiated the harvesting season in certain regions, such as the Baden area around Offenburg. As reported by local farmers, some frost damage has occurred in specific locations, although the severity varies between districts.

Kathrin Walter-Zeller, managing director of the Southwest Germany Fruit Growers Association, noted overall satisfaction with the current cherry harvest. In the Ortenau region, harvests typically commence early, followed by the Neckar Valley and Lake Constance region.

Last year's cherry harvest in Southwest Germany saw an improvement compared to previous years, as indicated by the state's Statistical Office. A total of 17,800 tons of sweet cherries were harvested - representing a 30% surge compared to 2023. The amount of sour cherries amounted to 3,900 tons, which was more than four times the dismal previous year's figure.

Since the 2024 harvest year in Bavaria, a part of southern Germany, has been impacted by drought, similar challenges might be faced in regions of southwest Germany. Despite the available data, specific information regarding the cherry harvest in 2024 compared to 2023 remains limited. However, weather conditions could have an impact on the yield and quality of the cherries this year.

The community policy might include discussions about potential impacts of the changing weather patterns on local agricultural industries, such as the cherry harvest, to ensure sustainable livelihoods for farmers. This year, as the lifestyle of cherry growers may be significantly influenced by unpredictable weather conditions, the employment policy could offer worker protections and support to adapt to these challenges in the food-and-drink sector. Additionally, home-and-garden policies could provide aid for cherry growers in implementing climate-resilient gardening practices, ensuring the continued success of their orchards.
