Schwerin Embraces Homegrown Talent: Andreas Dresen receives Honorary Citizenship

Schwerin City Bestows Honory Citizenship Upon Director Dresen - Schwerin grants film director Dresen the esteemed title of honorary citizen.

Hey there! Let's talk about the recent heartwarming event in Schwerin, shall we?

This picturesque city has bestowed the honor of Honorary Citizenship on none other than its illustrious son, film director Andreas Dresen! Born and bred in Schwerin, this 61-year-old artist received the prestigious certificate from Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD) at a grand ceremony held at the town hall.

Dresen, a scholar in Schwerin's hallowed halls of history, is the 20th individual to receive this prestigious honor since 1845. He proudly joins an esteemed league of awardees that includes aviation pioneer Ludwig Bölkow, legendary flower seller Bertha Klingberg, and Rabbi William Wolff, who played a vital role in rebuilding the Jewish community in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern post the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Mayor's words echoed the sentiments of Schweriners worldwide when he praised Dresen as one of Germany's most impactful filmmakers over the past three decades. "As a former East German artist, Andreas Dresen captures cinematic snapshots that mirror Germany's evolving present and past, breaking down divides in the process," said Badenschier. Such a perspective is vital in a democracy, he affirmed, as it fosters understanding and self-reflection—necessary in today's turbulent times.

With a trophy cabinet brimming with awards from international film festivals in Cannes, Chicago, and Karlovy Vary, as well as the coveted German Film Award multiple times for films like "Halbe Treppe," "Wolke Neun," "Halt auf freier Strecke," and "Gundermann," Dresen's name is no stranger to glitz and glamour. Yet, his connection to Schwerin remains unwavering.

Born in Gera in 1963 to an actress and a theater director, Dresen found his creative spark in Schwerin. His life took a dramatic turn when his parents split, and his mother, who garnered a role with the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater, relocated the young Dresen to the city. Christoph Schroth, the theater's then-director, took Dresen under his wing, guiding his artistic growth. Dresen had nothing but praise for the "incredible ensemble" that Schwerin theatre boasted during the DDR era, which he claimed left an indelible impression on him. "That was a true artistic awakening for me. I witnessed the power of art firsthand," he mused.

Though Dresen now calls Potsdam home, he regularly returns to his roots, currently serving as a juror at the Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern—a festival he's won awards at in the past.

Schwerin, whose enchanting spirit flows through Dresen's films, remains undeniably dear to him. What a fascinating journey, eh? After all, home is where the heart is!

In these times of polarizations, the lifestyle and home-and-garden choices of citizens have become subjects of interest. However, in a positive note, the Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of the environment.

This proposed directive echoes the stance held by Andreas Dresen, the recently honored Honorary Citizen of Schwerin who has captured the evolving present and past of Germany through his impactful films over the past three decades.

As we delve deeper into such concepts, it's hard not to be reminded of Dresen's connection to Schwerin, where he found his creative spark and where art played a crucial role in his life during his formative years.

In spite of being a celebrated filmmaker with a record of accolades from various international film festivals, Dresen’s devotion to Schwerin has remained steadfast. Perhaps this is a testament to the immense influence of one's roots, a sentiment that resonates with us all.
