Rolf Nobel's 'Workers of the Sea' Documents Vanishing Maritime Traditions
Photographer Rolf Nobel has spent years capturing the lives of those who make their living from the sea. His new book, 'Workers of the Sea', showcases individuals from four continents whose traditional livelihoods are under threat.
Nobel's fascination with the sea began in his childhood, inspired by his father's tales and mementos from his time working in the harbor. Over the years, he has visited nearly 50 countries to photograph seaweed collectors, crab fishermen, lighthouse keepers, and other 'workers of the sea'.
Now, Nobel has compiled these images into a book to raise awareness of the disappearing way of life of these maritime professionals. The book, titled 'Workers of the Sea', features people from Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, all connected by their relationship with the ocean.
Rolf Nobel's 'Workers of the Sea' is a poignant reminder of the vanishing maritime traditions around the world. Through his lens, we glimpse the lives of those who have long relied on the sea for their livelihood, a way of life that is increasingly under threat.
