The 68th World Press Photo exhibition is set to open its doors in Portimão, Portugal, at the former fish market, from July 20th to August 10th. This marks the first time the exhibition is hosted in Portugal, with Portimão as the debut city.

Curated by the Associação Cultural Música XXI and supported by the Portimão City Council, the exhibition is part of the local cultural agenda "It's Summer, It's Portimão." Featuring 42 winning photographs selected from 59,320 images submitted by 3,778 photographers from 141 countries, the exhibition highlights themes such as conflicts, crises, gender identity, and the consequences of climate change.

One of the most significant moments captured this year is the "Photo of the Year 2025" by Palestinian Samar Abu Elouf, published by The New York Times. The poignant image depicts Mahmoud Ajjour, a 9-year-old boy seriously injured after fleeing an Israeli attack in Gaza, who lost both his arms as a result of the attack.

Other winners captured significant moments in Kenya, Myanmar, Haiti, El Salvador, and Georgia. Stories of resilience are present, including the journey of a transgender teenager from the Netherlands and a young Ukrainian woman affected by war. Unusual portraits of political leaders in the US and Germany are also part of the exhibition.

Portuguese photographer Maria Abranches is among the winners with her original project "MARIA." Human-animal interactions are featured, such as elephants in Zambia and monkeys in Thailand. The effects of climate change are depicted in countries like Peru, Brazil, and the Philippines.

Admission to the exhibition is free, and on Saturdays, the public can participate in conversations with renowned photographers. The exhibition will be open daily from 6:00 pm to midnight. For more information, visit www.worldpressphoto.org.
