Redo Sgr's Award-Winning Social Housing Project in Milan Emphasizes Urban Regeneration and Energy Savings

Redo Sgr, an acclaimed urban regeneration company based in Milan, has been recognized for its work in social sustainability with a prestigious award. The recognition came for a social housing project that has resulted in 468 affordable apartments, transformed five abandoned buildings, and includes shared spaces, daycare centers, and clinics.

This project, like others showcasing innovative approaches to social housing, focuses on energy savings, urban regeneration, and improving living conditions for families, young people, and seniors.

One such example is the Quinta Monroy Housing Project in Iquique, Chile. Designed by Alejandro Aravena and Elemental, this project adopted an incremental housing approach, with the government building a half-house with structural essentials, allowing residents to complete the homes over time. This method promotes social inclusion and urban integration, reducing urban inequality by maintaining residents’ access to jobs and services while allowing for home improvement ownership.

Another innovative social housing project is the Coliseu Social Housing Complex in São Paulo, Brazil. Located within a high-value land district, this 272-unit project upgraded slums rather than displacing residents, demonstrating effective use of fiscal instruments for urban regeneration.

In Brooklyn, New York, an innovative Urban Village project is currently under construction. This multi-phase project will deliver 2,000 affordable homes across 10 buildings, incorporating sustainable design features such as solar panels, green roofs, and ENERGY STAR appliances, to emphasize energy savings and environmental sensitivity.

Redo Sgr's project in Milan employs a similar innovative approach to building reuse and energy savings. The five abandoned buildings have been transformed into 468 affordable apartments, complete with shared spaces, daycare centers, and clinics. The apartments are designed for families, young people, and seniors, with neighborhood services like daycare centers and clinics integrated into the project.

These projects demonstrate the power of innovative thinking in addressing social housing needs, from incremental building and fiscal creativity to integrated sustainable technologies, all aimed at urban regeneration and improving energy efficiency.

  2. The innovative Quinta Monroy Housing Project in Iquique, Chile, showcases an incremental housing approach, where government-built half-houses with essentials enable residents to finish the homes over time, promoting social inclusion and urban integration.
  3. Dedicated to environmental-science and sustainable-living, these projects, including Redo Sgr's award-winning social housing, prioritize home-and-garden renovations that include shared spaces, daycare centers, and clinics to improve living conditions consistently, aligning with objectives for urban regeneration and energy savings.
