Refugees from Ukraine revamp Cluj playground, expressing heartfelt gratitude towards Romania
In the heart of Florești, a town near the Romanian-Ukrainian border, a renovated playground now stands as a symbol of unity, volunteerism, and community engagement. The "Friendship Park," previously considered unsafe for children due to old, rusty equipment, has been transformed into a vibrant and colorful space suitable for children of all ages, thanks to the collective effort of the Ukrainian community in Cluj County.
Three years after the start of the war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian refugees living in Cluj initiated a grassroots project to restore the playground as a heartfelt "thank you" gift to the local Romanian community for their generosity and hospitality. The project, entirely funded and carried out by the Ukrainian community, was completed without the involvement of large NGOs or institutions.
Anna Shevchenko, vice president of the Association of Ukrainian Youth in Romania, led the initiative. She stated that the project was a way for the Ukrainian community to show their gratitude in a more substantial manner than just saying 'Thank you.' The renovation was a collaborative effort between Ukrainian refugees, young parents, students, and volunteers living in the area. Many people offered assistance during the project, providing electricity and equipment.
The renovated "Friendship Park" has become a popular destination for families in Florești and the surrounding areas. The playground serves as a meaningful space for children of all nationalities and represents thanks from Ukrainians for Romanian kindness. The park was officially opened to the public on June 25, 2022.
Despite facing challenges, such as dealing with private property and getting help from the City Hall, the Ukrainian community persevered and completed the renovation in just two months. The renovated "Friendship Park" continues to be maintained by the Ukrainian community in Florești and Cluj.
The initiative reflects a strong example of refugee-led community integration and mutual support in the region. For Anna Shevchenko, the project is more than just a restored playground; it's a symbol of unity and resilience for the Ukrainian community in Romania.
The Ukrainian community in Cluj, led by Anna Shevchenko, transformed the "Friendship Park" into a vibrant and colorful space for outdoor-living, as a heartfelt thank you gift to the local Romanian community for their hospitality.
