Tap&Ride System Coming to Carris Metropolitana Bus Lines

The Tap&Ride system, a digital solution aimed at simplifying and encouraging the use of public transportation, is set to be introduced on Carris Metropolitana bus lines starting from August 15, 2025.

The new system will allow passengers to use bank cards with contactless technology for fare payment, similar to the Lisbon Metro. This contactless payment method is expected to make boarding faster and more convenient on these lines.

The testing for this new bus system began on July 23, 2023, with the first lines to undergo testing including 1624 (Cascais Terminal - Portela de Sintra), 2769 (Lisbon Campo Grande - Santo António dos Cavaleiros via Cidade Nova), and 3001 (Almada Cristo Rei - Cacilhas Terminal).

The expansion of the Tap&Ride system to other lines will occur gradually over the coming months, with weekly activations. As of Wednesday, July 26, 2023, the service is also available on lines 1633, 2727, and 3701.

Carris Metropolitana operates in four areas, each delegated to different private operators. Area 1 is operated by Viação Alvorada, covering Amadora, Oeiras, and Sintra. Area 2 is operated by Rodoviária de Lisboa, covering Loures, Mafra, Odivelas, and Vila Franca de Xira. Area 3 is operated by Transportes Sul do Tejo, covering Almada, Seixal, and Sesimbra. Area 4 is managed by Alsa Todi.

The presentation of this new system took place on line 1624 on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. The event was attended by Carlos Humberto de Carvalho, Rui Lopo, Nuno Piteira Lopes, and Teresa Mesquita.

Teresa Mesquita, a participant at the presentation, expressed confidence that the solution will be an essential element in the future. She stated that the new system allows for convenient and immediate travel using only a card.

SIBS believes that the new payment system will be an essential element in the intermodal mobility of the metropolitan region. TML aims to build a more modern and intelligent mobility system, focusing on technology to improve the passenger experience.

With the introduction of the Tap&Ride system, Carris Metropolitana will offer a more seamless and convenient travel experience to its passengers, further encouraging the use of public transportation.

  1. With the advent of the Tap&Ride system, the finance sector will witness increased usage of bank cards for contactless payments, benefiting both passengers and the industry.
  2. As Carris Metropolitana gradually implements the Tap&Ride system, the transportation industry is expected to undergo a transformation, making travel more convenient and appealing to the lifestyle-focused public.
  3. The integration of technology in the Tap&Ride system, such as home-and-garden surveillance systems or smart appliances, showcases the potential for further technological advancements in the daily lives of passengers.
