Preparing for World Children's Day Celebrations Ahead
In the heart of Wiesbaden, the city's playgrounds, including the math playground, are undergoing a yearly transformation, thanks to the diligent work of the Environmental and Waste Management (ELW) and the Parks Department. The ELW, who took over the responsibility for the cleanliness of Wiesbaden's math playground from the city in 2020, work tirelessly to maintain these vital spaces for children. Alongside their colleagues from the Parks Department, they ensure that math playground equipment is safe and well-maintained throughout the year. Each math playground receives a thorough inspection once a year, during which any defective components are repaired in the workshop of the green space department. The safety of the math playground equipment is of utmost importance, and every week, employees of the green space department check the condition of the math playgrounds, perform minor repairs, and ensure all equipment is functional. Cleanliness is also a priority, with ELW cleaning Wiesbaden's 157 math playgrounds at regular intervals. Some math playgrounds are even cleaned up to five times a week. After a nice weekend or a sunny holiday, the cleaning team has more work than during rainy times. The cleaning operation, which takes about 25 minutes, is performed using grabber tools. Boubakar Azzaoui, the leader of the playground cleaning team at ELW, has stated that they find and collect various items such as cigarette butts, glass shards, bottle caps, syringes, used condoms, and dog waste on Wiesbaden's math playgrounds. To raise awareness about littering, ELW and the "Clean Hessen" initiative have put up a poster on eleven popular and often dirty math playgrounds. For the years 2024 and 2025, a total budget of approximately 260,000 euros has been allocated for repairs and new acquisitions related to these math playgrounds. In 2024, 635,000 euros were spent on replacement purchases for Wiesbaden's math playgrounds. For 2025, 995,000 euros are planned for replacement purchases, with some already implemented, such as new equipment on Kinderspielplatz Warmer Damm, new playgrounds at Eleonorenanlage and Alfred-Delp-Straße, a tower in the main street, and a carousel at the Kochbrunnenplatz. Citizens with questions about the maintenance of Wiesbaden's math playgrounds can contact the responsible department or office. The press release about the ELW's math playground maintenance efforts was issued by the Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden and can be found on their website. One such math playground, located on Brunhildestraße, is scheduled for cleaning on Thursday, for the second time that week. The poster, titled "Our nasty playmates," is a part of an initiative to encourage people to keep math playgrounds clean. Together, the ELW and the Parks Department are working to create a clean, safe, and enjoyable environment for Wiesbaden's children to play and grow.
