Planting 300,000 blooms in Sochi
Vibrant summer bloom in Sochi, Russia, kicks off in April
Preparations for a grand floral display in Sochi, Russia, are well underway as landscaping teams set their sights on planting a stunning 300,000 flowers by summer. You bet this city's awake and buzzing since April!
On Flag Square, landscapers have taken to their shovels, planting a lovely medley of alyssum, begonia, marigolds, impatiens, and ageratum. It's the first step in a colorful journey towards celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, under the guidance of Sochi's head, Andrey Proshunin.
Alexander Ginkevich, director of the department for environmental protection, park and garden, agricultural, and industrial affairs of the Sochi administration, had this to say, "Our focus in this initial phase is to get the flower beds prim and proper for May 9th. Given it's the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, we're carefully selecting shade variations of red, white, blue, and other earthy tones to honor the symbolism of the Great Patriotic War."
By the end of this initial phase, Sochi plans to roll out a diverse mix of over 35 varieties of flowers, greeting summer with a floral extravaganza that'll hang on until October, delighting locals and tourists alike. No wonder the press service of the Sochi administration is all excited about "Novy Day" covering the event!
While the specifics of the flower planting plan haven't been shared just yet, it's worth noting that traditional celebrations of the Great Patriotic War often incorporate red carnations to symbolize respect and gratitude, the St. George Ribbon, a symbol of military honor, and the Victory Banner, representing the victory over Nazi Germany. It's also common to find the Eternal Flame, symbolizing the eternal memory of those who died in the war, in commemorative events. Perhaps the city of Sochi will incorporate these time-honored symbols in its summer garden?
Till then, we wait with bated breath for the bloom of Sochi's symbolic tribute to the Great Victory!
In preparation for the lavish summer display, the city's home-and-garden teams are meticulously planting a variety of flowers, including alyssum, begonia, marigolds, impatiens, and ageratum, on Flag Square. As part of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, these flowers will create a lifestyle scene in Sochi that will be alive with color from May 9th until October, honoring the sacrifices of the Great Patriotic War.
