Outdoor Bathing Season Equilibrium in 2025
The Sport- und Bäderbetriebe Essen (SBE), the organisation responsible for the swimming pool operations in Essen, has drawn a positive balance from the 2025 season. The city portal of Essen is issuing this information through their Press and Communications Office.
The season, which ran from May to September, saw a total of 227,382 people visit the three free baths operated by SBE: Grugabad, Schwimmzentrum Kettwig, and Bad and Sport Oststadt.
The busiest day was Sunday, June 22, with 9,994 bathers at Grugabad. Bad and Sport Oststadt had 46,623 visitors, while the Dellwig swimming pool also had a good season with 46,710 guests. Schwimmzentrum Kettwig had 48,577 visitors.
Complaints were limited to a few individual cases at the beginning of the season. The SBE attributed this success to early acquisition of personnel, close cooperation with the German Red Cross, the deployment of a security service, and the continuation of the identification requirement as significant contributors to safety.
To ensure sufficient qualified staff for the 2026 swimming pool season, timely and comprehensive measures are planned. Discussions with the seasonal staff hired last are already underway for the next season.
The swimming pool season experienced an operational interruption between 10 am and 2 pm until mid-July. This was due to a lack of skilled staff in the baths and the expected low visitor numbers before the summer holidays.
The Steele swimming pool will close on September 20, while Grugabad ended its season on September 14. Kettwig and Bad and Sport Oststadt closed on August 31.
