Time for a Change: Goodbye to Iconic 54° North Beach Bar

Demolition in Progress: North Strand 54° - North's Beach Bar is undergoing destruction.

Prepare for a heartfelt goodbye! The legendary Beach Bar 54° North at Ording Beach is being knocked down. Tourism Director of St. Peter-Ording, Katharina Schirmbeck, shares a bittersweet sentiment: "It's hard to see it go, but it's crucial for the region's safety and future prosperity."

The demolition was a prerequisite set by the State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Conservation Schleswig-Holstein (LKN) and the National Park Wadden Sea. Moreover, it was necessitated for safety reasons, as earlier communicated by the Tourism Office.

A Regretful Demolition of a Cultural Icon

The structure, permanently submerged in water at high tide, has undermined the building's stability. The demolition plan includes securing 54 piles from the jetty and the massive wooden understructure beneath the building, to be stored and auctioned off at a later date.

A New Lease of Life Awaits

The nostalgic memories associated with the pile-dwelling have left an indelible mark on our area - as a famous gathering spot, snapshot-worthy landmark, and a fount of memories. Despite the sentiments, Schirmbeck assures us, "The essence of the old beach bar will continue to thrive in a new location."

A new observation platform with gastronomic delights will rise 250 meters inland, ensuring both locals and visitors won't be bereft of a lofty-height haunt.

St. Peter-Ording's Stilt Houses

Stilt houses have been an integral part of St. Peter-Ording for over a century. These unique wooden structures, perched on pilings and scattered along the beach, serve as iconic landmarks of the locale. They are rare finds on the German coast, as mentioned by the Tourism Office.
