North Rhine-Westphalia Dialect Map: Location of the "Ratsch at the Helm"

In the heart of Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia is a region brimming with unique dialects, yet some areas remain 'white spots' on the language map when it comes to expressing a common phrase – 'having a chat over a beer'. These 'white spots' have caught the attention of researchers from regional associations, who are relying on the support of the people of North Rhine-Westphalia to fill these gaps.

Dr. Charlotte Rein, a linguist from the LVR, explains the existence of these 'white spots'. She emphasises the importance of authentic linguistic data in understanding the richness of everyday colloquial variants in the dialects of the Rhineland and Westphalia, which are still little researched.

The language map is a valuable tool used in this research, with over 4,000 people already participating. If you're interested in joining this fascinating project, here's how you can get involved.

First, download the PALAVA app from your preferred app store. PALAVA is available for free on all major platforms. Once downloaded, create an account or sign in. The app offers features that allow you to record, upload, or annotate audio or text samples of local dialects.

Follow any community guidelines or project instructions within the app related to North Rhine-Westphalia dialect documentation. By participating, you'll be helping to document the unique dialects of your region, contributing to a better understanding of the linguistic landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Everyone is invited to participate in this exciting research project. So, why not download the PALAVA app today and start documenting the dialects of North Rhine-Westphalia? Your contributions could help fill in the 'white spots' on the language map and preserve the rich heritage of the region's dialects for future generations.
