Niels Raeder secures the silver medal, marking the eighth occasion for Kanu-DM.
North Rhine-Westphalia Canoeists Shine at Youth World Championships
Coach Timo Rosenthal expressed satisfaction with the performances of the 15 KSG canoeists at the 2023 Canoe Sport Youth World Championships. In a series of impressive displays, several athletes from North Rhine-Westphalia reached medal ranks and qualified for various finals.
Nico Pickert (LDKC) and Nico Paufler (KGE) led the charge, winning a combined total of 2 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals at the Olympic Hope Games Poznan 2023. Specific details on their disciplines were not explicitly stated in the results.
In the women's youth category, Atir Chachmann and Mara Jungbluth qualified for the B-final over 500 meters. Chachmann finished third in the B-final, while Dittmar finished fourth. The duo also competed in the double canoe event, finishing fifth.
Emma Dittmar caused a positive surprise by finishing seventh in the A-final over 1000 meters in the women's youth category. She also teamed up with Junia Leiß from Wiking Bochum to win a medal in the double canoe, finishing third.
Jannick Treute reached the B-final and finished ninth in the men's youth category over 500 meters. Treute also competed in the four-man canoe event, finishing ninth alongside Jason Siegmeier, Mara Jungbluth, and Vincent Owczarczyk over the same distance.
One of the standout performances came from Niels Raeder, who won the championship over 5000 meters in a tough race. Raeder also finished eighth in the A-final in the single sculls over 1000 meters. In the final race, Raeder raced in a group of three, pulling away slightly in the penultimate turn to win with ease, benefiting from his marathon experience to shake off his opponents in the turns.
Rosenthal praised Raeder for his consistent training and successes, but also noted that Atir Chachmann would have been a candidate for the A-finals if not for illness in preparation. He also mentioned that Mara Jungbluth, being a young year group, faced difficulty against older competitors in the youth class.
Jason Siegmeier and Michel Hömberger were eliminated in the preliminary rounds in other disciplines. Despite the setbacks, the North Rhine-Westphalia canoeists showed great promise and determination, making Rosenthal hopeful for the coming season, particularly for Jungbluth.
