Neighbors in Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa, express their concerns about a proposed mid-century modern style home in their formal neighborhood.

In the heart of Ottawa's elite Rockcliffe Park, nestled amidst towering, regal trees, Julie and Dave Turnbull dared to be different. They dreamt of a mid-century modern abode that effortlessly blended comfort, style, and a connection with nature - a righteous challenge for this conservative neighborhood. Their dream, however, was a mystery waiting to unfold.

"Our sanctuary had to encapsulate the very essence of modern mid-century design, fostering a harmonious union of comfort, aesthetic appeal, and a nod to Mother Nature," Julie gushed.

"In our quest for spatial harmony, we yearned for distinct spaces for our two boys and ourselves, to coexist as a family and revel in our shared moments," she continued.

Their Ottawa architect, Christopher Simmonds, recognized the magnitude of their ambitions. Crafting a 3,175-square-foot mansion on an oddly-shaped, curvaceous lot wasn't an easy feat.

"The looming question was whether we could squeeze enough abode onto that lot to make the clients swoon. The unique topography, with a slight rise from the street to the main living level, allowed us to invent a split level, thereby concealing the garage nestled beneath the living area," Simmonds disclosed.

The main living areas are situated on the ground floor, elevated slightly is the kids' domain, and the office, master suite, and ensuite reside on the level above, interconnected by a quaint bridge suspended over an atrium. Julie adores the thoughtful layout, providing individuals with their private zones while still offering enticing communal spaces.

The home boasts privacy at the front, with clerestory windows granting a glimpse of the indoors while maintaining a shroud of mystery. The kitchen boasts floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering breathtaking views of the outdoor living area at the rear, complete with a petite pool, generously-sized deck, and cozy patio.

So, how did the neighborhood respond to their unconventional choice?

Heritage Ottawa, rather intriguing ornaments in their own right, approved of the design plans. "Our designs brushed aside their concerns regarding the trees on the property. A registered botanist examined the health and well-being of the trees as we planned our design strategy to preserve them," Simmonds shared.

"We strove to create an atmosphere of tranquility in every nook and cranny, constructing a sense of flow, balance, and harmony of materials," said Simmonds.

Apparently, their endeavors have paid off.

"Our neighbors frequently pause for a chat when we're outside, commending the aesthetics of our home. They appreciate its seamless integration with the landscape and the traces of nature and organic elements intelligently woven into its design," Julie beamed.

"Our home invokes feelings of serenity and solace, a true haven from the storm. This tranquil atmosphere is often punctuated by the delightful ruckus and pandemonium that ensues when raising our two lively boys and our hyperactive pooch," she concluded.
