A Compassionate Spirit Taking Action: The Journey of Federico Guerrero

Federico Guerrero's heart shines bright, turning encounters into opportunities to serve. It was a casual coffee break with taxi colleagues that set him on a path to help the less fortunate.

One sunny afternoon, Federico found himself in a local bar in Rosario, sharing stories with his peers while taking a break from his taxi work. The group soon discussed taking action to help people in need by distributing hot meals once a week. And so, Taxistas Solidarios en Accion was born.

Federico, then 33 and in the taxi business for three years, remembers, "We started cooking at one of the taxi drivers' houses. We began with fifteen and ended up being twenty."

The group soon realized that hunger wasn't just about meals; it was also about connection and empathy. So, they started visiting the most overlooked neighborhoods, like Ludueña, Empalme, Saladillo, Mangrullo, Zona Cero, and eventually, Villa Oculta, where Federico chose to focus his efforts, despite the challenges it presented.

Villa Oculta is home to about 300 families, each with two or three children. The streets are unpaved, and many homes lack basic services like electricity and running water. Federico vividly recalls, "The houses are humble, with dirt floors, wooden walls, and nylon roofs."

May 7 has been celebrated as Taxi Driver's Day in Argentina since 2006, commemorating Eva Perón's support of the Argentine Taxi Drivers' Union. However, the growth of travel apps led to fewer trips and less income for many taxi drivers, forcing some to leave the profession.

Despite these difficulties, Federico remained committed. As his colleagues gradually left the project, he persevered alone. He selected Villa Oculta to focus his attention and resources, hosting a series of events like weekly snacks, Children's Day celebrations, and annual neighborhood anniversaries.

These events proved transformative for the community, but they also took a toll on Federico's taxi work. He lost his job twice for his dedication to the villa, first due to a disgruntled vehicle owner who saw him during a live interview and later due to his association with the villa itself. However, his work garnered attention, helping him secure support and resources through his Instagram profile.

Federico dreams of building a community dining room in Villa Oculta, ensuring that everyone in the neighborhood has access to hot meals regardless of the weather. To this end, he has purchased land in Villa Oculta and collected donations of building materials, but he still needs more resources to complete the project.
