Movie debut of "Witness" in Gütersloh electrifies spectators

The Culture Department of Gütersloh is proud to announce that the highly anticipated oral history project clips are now accessible to the public. The collection, which was unveiled on the 17th of September, 2025, offers a unique insight into the experiences of local residents growing up during wartime and post-war times.

In her welcome speech, Lena Jeckel, head of the Culture Department, emphasized the importance of storytelling in bringing history to life. She expressed her hope that these personal accounts would provide a valuable resource for both research and future generations.

The project, which consists of 23 intense interviews, received a standing ovation at its sold-out premiere at the Bambi Cinema. The two one-hour films, created from a total of 12.5 hours of interview material, are now available for free on the Culture Portal's website and the Culture Portal of the Culture Department.

The interviews cover a wide range of topics, including air raids, rationing, neighborhood solidarity, early signs of hope in the post-war era, and childhood during the Nazi era. Julia Kuklik, city archivist, stated that the project underscores the significance of preserving memories for future generations.

For those interested in delving deeper, the full conversations are accessible at the City Archives. Additionally, a brochure with photos of the participants and background information has been created as part of the project. This brochure is available free of charge at the Culture Department in the town hall or at the City Archives.

As the oral history project clips are now accessible, the community of Gütersloh invites everyone to explore these personal accounts and gain a deeper understanding of their shared history.
