Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Controversial Spending: Fish Ladder, GoMeVo, and More

Several controversial projects and spending decisions in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have sparked criticism and debate. From the construction of a fish ladder to the state's daycare educator campaign, taxpayers' money is under scrutiny.

The planned fish ladder at Nebel in Dobbin-Linstow is facing criticism for its high cost and invasive nature. Critics argue that a less expensive alternative, which retains the mill pond, would be more suitable. The Ministry of Agriculture is urged to review the petitions committee's arguments and make the project's decisions transparent.

The online trading platform 'GoMeVo', launched during the Corona pandemic, has generated only 1,714.48 euros in sales in 2022, despite costing around 1.5 million euros in tax money. With only 20 shops registered, the platform's viability is being questioned.

In the realm of infrastructure, the state capital Schwerin plans to build a bicycle parking garage near the main station for 3.2 million euros. However, this project is criticized for its lack of integration into an overall bicycle traffic concept and the city's catastrophic traffic situation for cyclists.

The state's daycare educator campaign has spent 588,338.26 euros on advertising, including posters, postcards, and a website. This spending is criticized as educators' hours are being reduced or they are being dismissed due to declining child numbers. The state daycare parents' council has slammed the inconsistent policy of using tax money to advertise for professionals while not employing experienced educators further.

Two entries from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the new Black Book of Taxpayers criticize the state's advertising activities. Additionally, a roundabout costing around 1.3 million euros is being built in Ueckermünde, despite a hotel project next to it not being realized and with no evidence of increased traffic or accident blackspots.

The state has spent 138,817.40 euros on producing and shipping 11,700 wall calendars with views of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, despite a tense budget situation.

These projects and spending decisions have raised eyebrows among taxpayers and critics alike. While some argue that these projects are necessary for the state's development, others question the use of public funds and call for more transparency and accountability.
