Meadow development in Bucharest's Tineretului Park
TRASHED paradise blooms in Bucharest's Tineretului Park
Head over to the Tineretului Park in Bucharest and catch a glimpse of a haven bursting with vibrant wildflowers. This urban meadow, just steps away from Tineretului Island, is a refreshing addition to the city.
The urban meadow is a brainchild of Bucharest City Hall's Parks & Lakes Administration (ALPAB) and the Văcăresți Nature Park Association – the very group that initiated the transformation of Văcăresți Park, famously known as the Bucharest Delta.
Over 28 hardy annual and perennial wildflower species now call this 1,000 sqm plot home, including marigolds, soapworts, flax, dame's rocket, wallflowers, hollyhocks, poppies, corn-cockles, daisies, wild chamomile, chrysanthemums, and dianthuses. This new addition not only enhances the park's beauty but also serves as a beacon for local fauna, drawing in birds, bees, and butterflies.
A floating island found a home in the park's lake, ready to welcome the common tern as a nesting spot and offer a sunbathing haven for turtles. The floating island also doubles as a bird-watching point for nature enthusiasts.
The urban meadows are an innovative, budget-friendly approach to creating green spaces in the city. These require minimal maintenance and can thrive without irrigation, acting as barriers against urban dust[2].
With their mission accomplished in 2023, the Văcăresți Nature Park Association aims to replicate similar meadows in different parts of Bucharest and create themed tracks for nature walks[2].
