"LA's site unveils 'Life Cycles: A Bamboo Journey with Tanabe Chikuunsai IV'"

Tanabe Chikuunsai IV, a renowned fourth-generation Japanese bamboo artist, is set to captivate audiences in Los Angeles with his latest installation, "LIFE CYCLES: A Bamboo Exploration with Tanabe Chikuunsai IV". The exhibition, presented by our website Los Angeles, is a testament to Chikuunsai's mastery of traditional bamboo artistry and his innovative approach to creating monumental, site-specific sculptures.

The installation, totaling 70 feet long, is Chikuunsai's longest to date. It features a site-specific, immersive bamboo construction made with 15,000 woven bamboo strips held together with tension. Visitors can engage with the dramatic, soaring form, viewing it from multiple angles as it twists and winds across the gallery.

The exhibition, which will be on display from July 28, 2022, to January 15, 2023, is Chikuunsai's first-ever Los Angeles exhibition. For this installation, he employs two other types of bamboo - madake ("Japanese timber bamboo") and kurochiku ("black bamboo").

Chikuunsai is part of a lineage of bamboo artists based in the Kansai region of Japan, specifically the city of Sakai in Osaka prefecture. He is considered a master of Japanese basketry and bamboo craft, continuing a rich family tradition in bamboo artistry.

The exhibition includes an introductory section with powerful artworks that hint at the main attraction, debuting on July 13. A time-lapse video of the main installation's fabrication will later be shown in the exhibit itself. The public can view into the main gallery from July 13 through July 23 to observe the artist and his team as they create the spectacular, large-scale installation.

KCRW and Los Angeles magazine are media sponsors for the event. Yumekoubou, TAI Modern, Kanasaki Chikuzaiten, and Yamagishi Chikuzaiten provide exhibition support. For more information, visit our website Los Angeles' website and social channels: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
