Kyoto textile maker's 17th-century archives inspire Dimorestudio's glossy new textile collection
Introducing the Harmonious Blend of East and West: Hosoo and Dimorestudio's Hemispheres Collection
In the heart of Milan, a collaboration between two distinct worlds is creating a stir. Hosoo, a Kyoto-based company rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and Dimorestudio, a Milanese design firm known for contemporary Italian aesthetics, have come together to create the Hemispheres Collection.
The name Hemispheres, derived from the ancient Greek word for "half-sphere," symbolizes the harmonious blending of contrasting values such as East and West, tradition and modernity, and stillness and movement to form a unified artistic world.
Emiliano Salci from Dimorestudio first visited Hosoo's Kyoto base, where he explored the company's extensive archive of over 20,000 traditional obi textile designs. This lineage of weaving dates back to 1688 and has served the imperial family. Drawing inspiration from this rich heritage, Dimorestudio developed a new collection that reinterprets these motifs with a modern design language.
The Hemispheres Collection was unveiled at Milan Design Week 2025, captivating audiences with its novel fusion of Japanese Nishijin weaving techniques with Italian aesthetics. The collection comprises 33 new textile works, exhibited in Kyoto for the first time in August 2025, showcasing the continuity and creative evolution of Hosoo’s traditional art.
To extend the collaborative narrative beyond textiles into spatial design, designer Osanna Visconti contributed by creating complementary bronze furniture pieces inspired by the Hemispheres patterns. These pieces, featuring natural motifs such as bamboo branches, leaves, and flowers, harmonize smoothly with the Hemispheres collection.
The Magnolia collection, created by Osanna Visconti at a Milan foundry, shares an appreciation of historical craftsmanship with the Hemispheres collection. Inspired by the life cycle of the magnolia, the Magnolia collection's intricate bronze flower-inspired frames highlight the subtle gold threads in Dimorestudio's botanical fabrics.
The patterns in the Hemispheres collection have been reinterpreted in soft desaturated shades, inspired by both the historic sketches and the work of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. This meeting point of past and present, East and West, is on display at the atmospheric 17th-century atelier of Osanna Visconti during Milan Design Week.
The Hemispheres Collection and the Magnolia Collection are now available to shop at Atelier Osanna Visconti, Milan. This collaboration not only showcases the beauty of traditional craftsmanship but also hints at the possibilities of future tradition.
