First Children's Book Cabinet Opens in Pasing, Munich

A landmark community initiative promoting children's access to literature has been inaugurated in Munich's Pasing district. The initiative, proposed by 14-year-old Freedom Odianosen, marks the first children's book cabinet in the city.

Freedom's idea to establish a free, open-access library for children found immediate approval, with financing from the local BA amounting to approximately 7,500 euros. The book cabinet debuted on August-Exter-Straße 1, located at the inner courtyard of the Pasinger Fabrik.

Conny Beckstein from the children and youth culture workshop, district manager Frieder Vogelsgesang (CSU), and local children's officer Evelyn Lang (SPD) were present at the inauguration. Freedom emphasized the importance of tailoring the cabinet's interior design to cater to various age groups and promote an uncomplicated reading experience for both the young and old.

A unique feature of the cabinet is an integrated seating area, appealing to both children and adults. The Pasinger Fabrik's children and youth associations will share responsibility for the care and maintenance of the book cabinet.

Additional ideas proposed by the children at the most recent clinic are awaiting implementation. Most notably, the issue of litter persisting on the playground at Hellihofweg remains a concern. Former attempts to address this issue, including the installation of a preventive toilet, have faced challenges, leading to a renewed focus on sustaining a clean and safe environment.

Vogelsgesang advises increased vigilance to prevent further contamination, while the children work together to implement their second attempt at addressing this longstanding issue.

The book cabinet, inspired by Freedom Odianosen, goes beyond literature by incorporating a home-and-garden element, featuring an inviting seating area for readers of all ages. With the cabinet's success, it's hoped that this lifestyle initiative will foster a love for reading and a clean, safe environment in Pasing, Munich.
