Kangaroos Purchase the Brand 'Colonel Tapiocca' for Shoe Launch
In a significant turn of events, Gar-Sport, the family-owned company headed by Luis López Sánchez, has acquired the footwear brand Colonel Tapiocca. The acquisition comes after Colonel Tapiocca was liquidated following months of unsuccessful debt renegotiations with creditor banks.
The bankruptcy filing was made in September last year, marking the end of an era for the brand that was founded in the late 1980s by decorator Ricardo Beleta and later joined forces with Roberto Alcalde. Gala Capital, a venture capital group, had taken a 20% stake in Colonel Tapiocca in 1994, and later took full control of the brand in 1996 when it had 172 stores across Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, France, and Belgium.
However, Gar-Sport's acquisition of Colonel Tapiocca marks a new beginning. The new ownership, through Diego García González, plans to revitalise the brand. The new Colonel Tapiocca footwear collection will be presented at the Modacalzado+Iberpiel fair in March. Although the specific date or location of the collection launch is not yet known, the anticipation is palpable.
In addition to the new collection, Gar-Sport is also preparing a new warehouse to house the activities of both the Kangaroos and Colonel Tapiocca brands. The new warehouse will begin operating in June and is located near the current headquarters in Fuensalida, Toledo.
Meanwhile, Studios Middelburg, the new owner of the textile firm previously associated with Colonel Tapiocca, has acquired the textile brand in an operation valued at around 1.7 million euros. The transmission contract for the brands has already been signed but is still pending activation by the judge, according to sources close to the process.
During the liquidation process of the company controlled by Gala Capital, Gar-Sport acquired Colonel Tapiocca. The new ownership aims to distribute the brand through the multi-brand channel, signalling a shift in strategy for the iconic footwear brand.
As Colonel Tapiocca embarks on this new chapter, fans and industry watchers eagerly await the unveiling of the new collection and the brand's future under its new ownership.
