New Panerai Submersible Watches Honour Italian Navy's Elite Aviation Branch

Panerai has expanded its Submersible collection with the introduction of two new timepieces: the Submersible Marina Militare (PAM01697) and the Submersible Marina Carbotech (PAM01698). These watches draw inspiration from Panerai's longstanding partnership with the Italian Navy, particularly the Aviazione Navale, the naval aviation branch.

Design-wise, the watches reflect elements inspired by the Aviazione Navale's flight gear and uniforms. The dials feature a green-grained matte finish with a dark gradient, echoing military flight equipment, complemented by larger Super-LumiNova-coated dial markers for enhanced legibility under demanding conditions. The small seconds counter is radar-inspired, featuring the subtle engraved insignia of the Aviazione Navale, adding a distinct military aviation motif to the face.

The PAM01697 features a 44mm brushed stainless steel case with a matte green ceramic bezel, symbolizing aviation gear colours, and a screw-down case back engraved with Aviazione Navale wings. On the other hand, the PAM01698 model uses Panerai’s proprietary Carbotech™ material—a carbon fiber composite known for its lightweight strength, corrosion resistance, and unique matte finish with a varying grain pattern. Its case back is DLC-coated titanium and also debuts the Aviazione Navale wing emblem.

Both watches are rated for 300 meters of water resistance, with Panerai testing beyond this depth, underscoring their practical tool watch pedigree inspired by professional military requirements. They are powered by the automatic P.900 calibre movement, known for its robustness, slim profile, a 72-hour power reserve, and high precision.

The watches are offered with green canvas and black rubber straps and are available for purchase now. The PAM01697 retails for $12,500, while the PAM01698 retails for $19,500. The dials' applied indexes are 20 percent wider in diameter for easier reading, and both watches feature a green dial with a black gradient finish and a Marina Militare signature at 6 o'clock.

The Submersible Marina Militare has a case made of brushed 316LVM stainless steel and is 13.45 mm thick, while the Submersible Marina CarbotechTM has a case made of Carbotech material, which is 14.25 mm thick.

Panerai's roots in military-grade instrument manufacture date back over a century to the early 1910s, when the brand began producing precision instruments for military use, including underwater apparatus and tools tailored for naval missions. The brand's relationship with the Italian Navy has evolved over time, with Panerai eventually working on landing systems and technical equipment as well. In 1935, the brand created the Ref. 2533 prototype, a timepiece made for punishing underwater missions.

In summary, these new Submersible Marina Militare timepieces encapsulate Panerai’s long-standing heritage of military-grade instrument manufacture, marrying historical military tradition with contemporary innovation, especially emphasizing aviation and underwater expertise of Italy’s naval forces.
