IOPC Investigates Charing Cross Custody Suite: Nine Officers at Risk of Dismissal
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating serious allegations at the Charing Cross custody suite. This includes claims of excessive force, discriminatory comments, and failure to report inappropriate behavior. Sir Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police's top boss, has vowed to root out such officers, with nine Charing Cross officers potentially facing dismissal.
The probe follows allegations of racism, misogyny, and excessive force against prisoners. Two others, a former Met officer and a civilian staff worker, also face disciplinary charges. Sir Mark Rowley, who has been on a mission to clean up the force since taking the job three years ago, expects those involved in such behavior to be swiftly dealt with. The IOPC has appealed to Met officers and staff for information, with the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, backing the force's pledge to remove unfit officers. One officer is under investigation for the potential criminal offense of perverting the course of justice.
The suspended officers are subject to a gross misconduct investigation. If found guilty, they could be dismissed. Sir Mark Rowley's warning to racist, sexist, and violent officers is clear: they will not be tolerated and will be driven out of their jobs.
