Involvement of the Commission in drafting the report was also apparent.
The Regensburg district in Bavaria, Germany, has been honoured with a special award: the title "World Cleanup Municipality." This recognition comes as a result of the district's continuous commitment to waste prevention and environmental education, as well as its active participation in cleanup actions since 2005.
Every year, County Councilor Tanja Schweiger acknowledges the efforts of participating groups with a raffle of attractive prizes for both young and old. The district's "The district cleans up" action, also known as "Rama Dama," has been a key part of these efforts, with over 170 groups participating this year alone.
Citizens, associations, and schools in the district take part in cleaning up roadsides, forests, and public places from waste. The district ensures proper waste disposal, making it easy for groups to hand in collected waste. Collected recyclables are then separated and fed into the recycling process via recycling centers.
The Regensburg district's actions have significantly strengthened local awareness of a clean and intact environment. As a result, the amount of waste is steadily decreasing in many collection areas due to recurring actions.
The district's registration of the action "The district cleans up" with the World Cleanup Day played a crucial role in earning the "World Cleanup Municipality" title. This year, the global citizen movement for environmental pollution and plastic waste removal, World Cleanup Day, will take place on September 20, 2023.
Registrations for cleanup actions are still being accepted. For more information and the registration form, visit www.landkreis-regensburg.de/buergerservice/abfallratgeber/rama-dama/. Questions about the action can be directed to the Waste Management Department at 0941 4009-368 or [email protected].
By earning the "World Cleanup Municipality" title, the Regensburg district now joins a growing number of municipalities worldwide that are committed to fighting environmental pollution. The district's dedication to waste prevention and environmental education is a shining example for other municipalities to follow.
