Get ready to loosen those change bags, drivers, because parking in Copenhagen is about to get a whole lot more expensive! Starting April 1st, the city will implement paid parking on Sundays and hike up the rates across the board.

Let's Take a Ride

Changes to the parking regulations mean that rates across the city (excluding Frederiksberg with its separate parking rules) will inflate, with the exception of permit holders.

For instance, the cost in the "green" parking zone will jump from 25 kroner to 44 kroner per hour. If you're planning to relax in the green zone on Sunday, remember you'll be paying for the privilege – the first hour will be the only free one. So, if you plan to park for more than an hour, you'll be forking out the big bucks.

The current pricing structure includes 43 kroner for the red zone, 25 kroner for the green, 16 kroner for the blue, 12 kroner for the yellow, with the pricier zones typically encompassing central or congested areas. But don't worry, not all is gloom and doom – prices in zones like blue and yellow will see some relief, dropping to 26 kroner and 16 kroner, respectively, during peak hours.

There's some good news, though! A flat rate of 17 kroner per hour will apply in all zones between 6pm and 11pm, and 6 kroner per hour from 11pm-8am.

Keep It Green

Elected official Line Barfod, head of the city council's Public Works administration (teknik- og miljøforvaltning), is hoping the price hike will encourage more people to opt for public transport or bikes over their precious metal steeds.

"Autos gobble up a boatload of space when parked," she said, "and space is gold in this bustling metropolis! That's why it's best utilized for folks who gotta have a car."

Paid parking could also help dwindle down the air pollution, Barfod added.

Approximately 72,000 public parking spaces within Copenhagen's paid parking zones will be affected, according to the press release.

Time to Take the Wheel

Paid parking in Copenhagen (and throughout the kingdom of Denmark) usually requires the use of a parking meter or an app. Remember to register your parking, even if it's just for an hour on Sunday – you don't want to get saddled with any unnecessary fines!
