Identify & Preserve Rhön's Old Fruit Varieties on Oct 18
On October 18, 2025, a unique event will take place at Burg Fürsteneck in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön. From 1 to 5 PM, experienced pomologist Jan Bade and certified landscape orchardist Astrid Schäfer will host a variety identification day for Rhön scattered orchard apples and pears. The goal is to identify and preserve old fruit varieties in the region.
The event will occur rain or shine in the workshop area below the web room of the Academy Burg Fürsteneck. Visitors are welcome to explore the castle complex and its scattered orchards during their stay. Signage on site will guide them.
Parking is available on visitor parking lots below the castle complex, with the castle courtyard closed to car traffic. No registration is required, and participation is free. Visitors can bring five healthy, worm-free fruits of the respective variety for identification. High interest may lead to waiting times.
The identification day aims to preserve the rich fruit heritage of the Rhön region. With the expertise of Jan Bade and Astrid Schäfer, visitors can learn about and contribute to the conservation of old apple and pear varieties. The event offers a unique opportunity to engage with local fruit culture and history.
