Hudson Adventure: Day 4 Audioblog by Tom
The Luzerne Music Center, a renowned summer camp and festival for young musicians in Lake Luzerne, New York, is undergoing a significant transformation. The centre, which has been training young musicians and presenting high-level chamber music performances since 1980, is expanding its facilities and artistic programming, thanks to the leadership of its President and Artistic Director, Elizabeth Pitcairn.
Elizabeth, a world-class violinist, has been at the helm of the Luzerne Music Center since 2010, when she was named the successor by the camp's founders. Since then, she has been instrumental in curating faculty artist series, special concerts, and even performing herself with top musicians, including members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
One of the most exciting developments at the camp is the creation of a new bandshell. Elizabeth is spearheading this project, aiming to elevate the center's profile and capabilities even further.
The Luzerne Music Center has always been a hub for world-class players. Students audition for admission and are often headed for major orchestras around the globe. The instructors and guest artists at the camp are all active, top-level performers, providing an immersive learning experience for the students.
John Storyk, a friend of Elizabeth's since her time at the Luzerne Music Center, is also lending his expertise to the project. He will be helping to make the new practice rooms sound good with a few simple, low-budget fixes.
The camp's facilities have been undergoing an active and ongoing overhaul for the past three to five years. This includes the construction of new practice rooms, the installation of air conditioning, and the provision of new cabin accommodations. The Octagon, a new performance space at the camp, was designed by WSDG.
The Luzerne Music Center is more than just a summer camp. It is a cultural festival hosting professional concerts, and its campus and facilities have expanded in recent years, supported by grants from organisations such as the New York State Council on the Arts.
On August 3, the seniors at the Luzerne Music Center will perform a Dvorak Symphony, featuring a clarinet solo that John Storyk favours. This promises to be a performance not to be missed.
The Luzerne Music Center continues to thrive under the leadership of Elizabeth Pitcairn, providing a unique and enriching experience for young musicians and music lovers alike.
