New York's First Horror Bookstore Opens Its Doors
On September 6, 2025, the Twisted Spine bookstore will open its doors at 306 Grand Street, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This unique bookstore is NYC's first and only dedicated to horror and dark literature.
Lauren Komer and Jason Mellow, the store's founders, have been passionate about the macabre genre for years. They started The Twisted Spine as an online shop and pop-up events, and with the help of a successful $40,000 crowdfunding campaign, they are now ready to bring their vision to life in a physical location.
The Twisted Spine offers a 1,200 square foot space filled with about 5,000 books of all genres, with a focus on local authors and independent publishers. The store's design reflects a gothic library and dark academia vibe, featuring hardwood floors, chandeliers, and a "graveyard patio" adorned with decorative tombstones.
The store will be more than just a place for scary reads. It aims to be a hub for all things scary, welcoming horror enthusiasts and introducing new readers to the genre. The book selection spans from the 18th century to the present day, with sub-genres like slasher, true crime, and fungal horror.
For those new to the genre or looking for books suitable for younger readers, The Twisted Spine will have sections tailored to these needs. The store will also host events, book clubs, and workshops to foster a sense of community among its patrons.
The Twisted Spine's book club can be joined on Fable, and the store will offer books in their original languages. The shop will also feature an espresso bar during the day and a beer and wine bar in the evenings, making it an ideal spot for a chill read or a spooky night out.
The Twisted Spine is located next to Night Owl Video, Twenty Sided, and The Four Horsemen, making it a perfect addition to the vibrant Grand Street scene. The store's opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday 11 am to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 11 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm.
