Heating Bills Surge 12%: Tenants Urged to Challenge Inadequate Heat, Install Thermostats
Residents are urged to scrutinise their HVAC bills following a significant increase of nearly 12% nationwide since July 2025. With colder weather setting in, tenants should be aware of their rights and ways to potentially reduce expenses.
Tenants can challenge their HVAC bills if their apartments are inadequately heated. If radiators are barely warm, residents can demand a recalculation. Additionally, installing thermostats on radiators can reduce heat supply and prevent overuse, leading to savings of up to a third on expenses.
Another way to prevent overpayment is to ensure the accuracy of the apartment area stated in the bill. Overestimation of the coefficient for common area needs (ODN) by management companies can contribute to high payments. Lack of individual heat meters can also result in inflated rates during the off-peak season. While companies like ista SE and Techem are involved in heat cost accounting, there's no specific information indicating their responsibility for overestimations.
Heat loss through poorly insulated windows and cracks can also increase expenses by up to 25%.
With HVAC bills on the rise, tenants are advised to review their statements, challenge inadequate heating, and consider installing thermostats. Addressing heat loss and ensuring accurate billing can help mitigate the impact of the 12% increase in tariffs.
