Get Ready for the Hamburg Short Film Festival Kickoff!

Today marks the beginning of the 41st Hamburg Short Film Fest. Running from the 3rd to the 8th of June across various cinemas in Hamburg, this year's event promises a diverse lineup of over 300 films. Analog filmmakers can rejoice as this year has something special in store for them.

A Stellar Lineup

The festival rings in themes like showcasing Sinti and Roma in films and fighting for a fairer, equal Hamburg. Additionally, the spotlight shines on glitz and self-determination. Whether you're a kid or an adult, there's something for everyone, with over 300 shorts and a dedicated children's program, "Mo & Friese", featuring 61 short films.

Three Competitions and a New Award

This year, filmmakers have a chance to win the Kodak Film Award, a new prize for filmmakers working with analog materials. A total of 84 films from over 50 countries have been selected for competition in the International Competition, German Competition, and the Triple Axel, where films under 3 minutes compete for prizes worth €18,500[2]. The theme for the Triple Axel this year: "Mission Impossible".

The Fair-Trades Film Festival of Germany

In February, the trade union Verdi honored the festival as the fairest film festival in Germany. Based on secret employee evaluations of festivals they had worked for, the Hamburg Short Film Festival received the highest rating[4].

The central hub of the festival is the Post at Kaltenkircher Platz. There, you'll find pop-up cinemas, an exhibition hall, a festival cafe, and a bar, with live music in the evenings.

Hasset Tefera Alemu

Hasset Tefera Alemu despises superlatives. Scales from one to ten are just nine-point scales to her, and because she loves so many films, she rarely reveals her favorite. Born in 2001 in Stuttgart, she has shed her dialect, possibly due to the ten years she spent in Hesse. For her studies in journalism and law, she moved to Mainz. During her internship at netzpolitik.org, she learned to explain what 'Open Source' really means. In Hamburg, she hopes to finally find the most important superlative: the best coffee in Germany.
