Giessen WWTP Modernization to Save 1.885 Million kWh Annually by 2025

The Giessen wastewater treatment plant is undergoing a significant modernization project to enhance energy efficiency. The current pond's upgrade is expected to be finalized by late 2025, with over 800 aerator membranes installed.

The plant's aeration systems are being successively renewed to adapt to the efficient compressed air supply of the new combined heat and power (CHP) plant and compressor station. This modernization aims to reduce energy consumption and operating costs for introducing oxygen into the aeration ponds. The plant has eight aeration ponds, each with a volume of 4 million liters, and one pond is taken out of operation per year for modernization work.

Since 2023, around 1,885,000 kWh of electricity per year has been saved, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 1,450 inhabitants. This energy-optimized aeration reduces the ecological footprint and increases operational safety by better reacting to changing loads in the wastewater. The goal is to operate the wastewater treatment plant more efficiently and sustainably with each modernization measure. The last two ponds are scheduled for modernization in 2026 and 2027.

The Giessen wastewater treatment plant's modernization is well underway, with significant energy savings already achieved. Upon completion, expected by the end of 2025, the plant will have reduced its energy consumption and operating costs, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient wastewater treatment process.
