Germany's First Fully Climate-Neutral Natural Bath Opens in Winsen

Winsen (Luhe) has made history by opening Germany's first fully climate-neutral natural bath. The bath, which opened on May 2, 2025, is a result of a comprehensive citizen participation process and was funded through the federal program 'Adaptation of urban areas to climate change'.

The natural bath in Winsen has achieved climate neutrality through the use of green electricity and modern technology. It boasts a photovoltaic system with a rated power of 66 kilowatt peak (kWp), which helps to offset its carbon footprint. This commitment to sustainability has led to significant savings, with the bath saving more than 130 tons of CO2 per year compared to a conventional outdoor pool.

The bath also promotes biodiversity through its design. It features natural shorelines and native plant species, creating a habitat for local wildlife. Protective measures have been implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of these creatures. The gastronomy within the bath follows a sustainable concept, using regional and seasonal ingredients and avoiding plastic packaging. The bathing water is cleaned using planted substrate filters, eliminating the need for chemical additives.

The opening of the first climate-neutral natural bath in Winsen marks a significant step towards sustainable urban development. Funded by the federal program 'Adaptation of urban and rural areas to climate change', the bath not only saves CO2 but also promotes biodiversity and supports local businesses through its sustainable practices. Despite a one-year delay in its opening, the bath has proven to be a valuable addition to the community, setting a precedent for future climate-friendly projects.
